In line with Bacardi’s environment projects, the beverage company’s biggest distillery located in Puerto Rico uses anaerobic digester technology to efficiently convert wastewater into energy. This Bacardi environment movement has pushed the company to invest over $18 million over the last two decades to concretize the concept. The process involved the utilization of micro-organisms to produce biogas from waste and then using the gas to produce energy. The core of the facility is an anaerobic digester.

This wastewater treatment process is able to produce significant amounts of renewable energy. Last year Bacardi’s Catao plant drew 30% of its energy demands from biogas, a testament of the efficacy of the process. In order to provide a co-generation facility, the Bacardi distillery is currently investing nearly $7 million. The facility will produce electricity derived from biogas to enhance the distillery’s energy efficiency as well as its reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

Another of Bacardi’s environment projects is its Martini & Rossi plant, which uses EHS management systems that have passed rigid OHSAS 18000 and ISO 14000 standards. Located in Pessione, Italy, the facility produces 12 million cases each year. The facility’s emissions control and energy consumption system treats wastewater through the Bacardi patented anaerobic treatment system. Moreover, the plant recycles 92.5% of its operational waste.

These efforts have helped the company save overall energy efficiency, which allows the company to continue producing the world’s finest spirits at the same time preserving the environment.
